We are a team of researchers from UNITEN, UM, UPM, and UTAR have collaborated in a project entitled Fostering Technical Entrepreneurship in Research Communities through Localised Content and Industrial Experts. This project is supported by UNITEN R&D Sdn Bhd (URND) and the Innovation and Technology Managers Association Malaysia (ITMA) and is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) under the Leaders in Fellowship (LIF) Community Grant 2020 scheme.
We have conducted a study involving university researchers as respondents. This study helped in identifying the challenges faced in commercialising research products in the local arena (Malaysia). Results indicate that most researchers are facing the following hurdles in moving forward:
- University-Industry lack of communication and trust
- Lack of support from the university for IP
- Lack of experience in the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) implementation
- Lack of commitment among the researchers to commercialise
- Lack of funding and support
Addressing these barriers, a set of modules have been developed for university researchers to comprehend essential concepts in taking their innovations to the market. With this in mind, the following webinars (each 60 minutes followed by a short Q&A) have been organized:
