Innovative 1 Fits-All Racking System- FlashEscape ™

An automated remote racking system that enables personnel to stand outside the arc flash boundary.

Introduction

Arc flash incidents occur every day in around the world and these accidents result in injuries ranging from minor burns to permanent hearing and vision loss, to death. At least one death is attributed to Arc Flash daily worldwide.

Many energy companies spend huge amount of money on medical claims due to these accidents. Presently Vacuum Circuit Breakers truck/carriages (VCBs) are manual rack-in and rack-out of service positions. Although these are equipped and protected with interlocking switches/devices from hazardous racking operation, malfunction of interlocking mechanism can result to catastrophic and life threatening accidents due to arc flash explosion.

Technology Feature

RIRO- Rack-In Rack-Out or better known as FlashEscape is designed to provide an automated remote racking system that enables personnel to stand outside the arc flash boundary.

This easy and automated machine has the following features”

  • No modifications to the circuit breakers
  • Remote operation
  • Operate with all type of circuit breakers (i.e. rotary, push & pull)
  • Use AC /DC power
  • Minimal set-up
  • Modular design for easy mobility
  • Wireless camera monitoring

A total of 50 units of the first version, RIRO, has been successfully deployed with Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

Market Potential

The increasing spending by large enterprises and on safety is at alarming stage. Energy sector is one of the largest sector and is expected to grow steadily due to its importance as one the critical infrastructure sectors.

According to market analysts, Asia Pacific is the largest region in the global utilities market, accounting for 41% of the market in 2018. Western Europe was the second largest region accounting for 22% of the global utilities market. With the growing demand, safety has become a prevalent issue. Our second version -FlashEscape ™ is designed to retrofit VCB with remote motorized automated racking system.

Decontaminated Equipment Cooling Contained

Introduction

As the pandemic is taking the world by storm, many expensive hospital equipment and machines are used to diagnose patients who may or may not be infected by the COVID19 virus. In an effort to curb the possibility of cross- contamination, these pieces of equipment are covered with plastic. This solution, however, is not suitable as by covering it 100%, the devices will overheat. By not fully covering it, there is a potential of cross-contamination on the surface and inside the device. Disinfectants are normally not sprayed into the device as the chemicals may damage the device. Thus, unprotected medical equipment can then be the source of infection to subsequent patients.

image

Technology Feature

DECO provenly isolates medical equipment from the environment and external contacts while at the same time providing proper heat removal for the enclosed medical equipment. DECO exclusively offers the following features:

  • Customizable design and size with no modifications to the existing medical equipment
  • Simple installation and operation with a large sliding/rolling door
  • Steady airflow to remove internal heat of the equipment
  • Clean cooling air, which is filtered using N95 filters
  • Clear and transparent surface, which can be cleaned using disinfectants without harming the enclosed equipment

Market Potential

DECO is an innovative and important product for protecting all hospitals’ medical equipment devices, which generate heat and are in contact with potential COVID-19 patients. In Malaysia alone, there are around 154 public and 250 private hospitals. Each hospital may use more than one piece of medical equipment. Hence, the market potential for DECO seems very promising.

Furthermore, the use of DECO is not limited to hospitals’ medical equipment. DECO can protect countless devices in factories, schools, private or government buildings, and many more.

Next Step

DECO has received two prestigious awards namely, UNITEN COVID-19 Challenge Award and 2020 Special MTE Award.

Commercially-viable DECO is available for deployment. The project team is seeking an interested party to license the technology/distributorship / OEM.

Protection of Intellectual Property

The product has been protected by patent protection no. PI 2020005005.

Design and Development of Low Cost Emergency Unite Ventilator

Unidirectional Cranking Mechanism with Chest Pressure Display and Touch Screen Control

Introduction

It is recognized that due to surge in respiratory diseases such as covid-19 extraordinary support of mechanical ventilator (EUV) is required to keep pace with clinical need. A low-cost ventilator system which must take great care regarding providing clinicians with the ability to closely control and monitor tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, bpm, and I/E ratio, and be able to provide additional support in the form of PEEP, PIP monitoring, filtration, and adaptation to individual patient parameters. It is recognize and important for anyone seeking to manufacture a low-cost emergency ventilator, that failing to properly consider these factors can result in serious long-term injury or death.

image

Technology Feature

Existing open-Source EUV system works in motor bi-direc tion operation for inspiration and expiration mode. This produces undue stress and heat on mechanical components and associated motor driver circuitry over long period of continuous usage. In UNITEN/URND, EUV we will develop both uni and bi -directional motor operation with cam and cranking mechanism to increase modes of operation and reliability of EUV system.

image

Market Potential

The global ventilator market is witnessing an exponential rise in the size of the market due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The overall market was estimated to be $1,072 million in FY 2018. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an extensive rise in the ventilator demand and has increased the growth rate by up to 172% in 2020. The market is favored by the development of low- cost ventilator products for scaling up the ventilator production.

Next Step

The project was short-listed and won the UNITEN COVID-19 challenge. Currently, the system is awaiting trails and approval from Malaysian Medical device Association. The project team is seeking for interested party with a view of licensing the technology / distributorship / OEM.

UV Difinfection ROBOT

A effective Bluetooth-controlled robot for sanitization via smartphone

Introduction

The pandemic of Covid-19 has changed our way of life, people are more hygienist to avoid the possibility of transmission of viruses. People are having difficulty living a normal life due to the high risk of getting infec ted. In Malay sia, most households use an aerosol-based disinfectant spray or chlorine-based compound to sanitize their homes to prevent this virus to spread. This solution can be hazardous to people as there is a possibility to be exposed to a harmful chemical substance. Due to this, we have ventured into a UV Disinfection Robot that uses Ultraviolet (UV) light to kill bacteria or viruses that can be controlled via smartphone.

image

Technology Feature

The existing open-Source Arduino UNO-based controlled robot will mount with several UV Lights on the top and bottom of the chassis. These robots can move through an android smartphone application with the help of a Bluetooth module system. Ideally, as the primary objective of the UV disinfect ant robot which to sanitize any surroundings by implementing Arduino Uno as the system to mimic or replace man in the creation of everyday activities, this robot is one of the technologies that involve movement to produce actions.
